The importance of collaborative working to tackle inequalities and improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of people in the North East. By Pam Smith, Chief Executive, Newcastle City Council

I am a firm believer of working in partnership with organisations across the city to deliver the best possible outcomes for our residents and businesses.

As part of the Newcastle Health Innovation Partnership (NHIP) we work together with key organisations to collaborate on research and innovation to bring about positive health and economic improvements to the city.

I am proud that we are a member of this partnership and I believe the strength we have by combining our knowledge and skills maximises the positive impact we can all make for the city.

I have been particularly impressed with the collaboration with Newcastle University to support pharmacy students via the Young@ Heart drop in clinic based at the Grainger Market. The development of this resource not only gives residents a more accessible way to receive health checks and advice it has also provided students with the opportunity to practice their skills with members of the public, something that was previously not a part of their course.

We’re also working in collaboration to allow for quicker discharge from hospital for people and give more support to help residents live independently in their own homes. This work between our reablement teams and NHS colleagues is showing real results.

I am committed to supporting the valuable work of this partnership to tackle inequalities and improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of people in the North East.
