NHIP leads the UK in translational ageing research, combining expertise in biology and epidemiology of ageing, experimental medicine and trials for older people.

Since 2007, our NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre has been at the forefront of ageing research and addressing the challenge of ageing syndromes; sarcopenia, frailty and multimorbidity. We continue to make substantial progress including:

  • Developing the pipeline and capacity in experimental ageing medicine. Five of the 23 BRC funded projects across all themes are now completed and a number of significant outputs have been generated.
  • Identifying and engaging with key individuals who have the skills to drive synergistic experimental medicine and apply expertise in individual long-term conditions to ageing syndromes.
  • Building cross-theme collaboration and strong links with the NIHR ARC North East and North Cumbria.

We will increase critical mass and overall impact through inclusion of additional NHIP strengths by taking a life-course approach to ageing. Our vision is to improve lives through world-class research in ageing and long-term conditions.
